The Bureau of Land Management has launched a “One Dollar, One Tree” program for the holiday season, offering Christmas trees and firewood for just $1 per tree or cord when collected from federal lands. The initiative runs through Dec. 31 and applies to western states and Alaska.
Under the program, families can harvest up to three Christmas trees and 10 cords of firewood, with additional flexibility in areas where resources are plentiful. A cord of wood measures roughly 4 by 4 by 8 feet. New cutting areas will also be opened in overstocked woodlands to support the program and help reduce hazardous fuels on public lands.
The BLM projects that the initiative could provide nearly $10 million in savings for families while promoting safer, healthier forests. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum said the effort is designed to make the holidays more affordable, allowing families to heat their homes and enjoy seasonal traditions. Each year, the BLM sells 30,000 to 40,000 cords of firewood, offering opportunities for recreation, personal use, and supplemental income from forest products on public lands.
