Phillies’ Sosa improving after collision results in bruised back

Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Edmundo Sosa reported that he is feeling much better after leaving Saturday’s 9-4 win over the New York Yankees due to a mid-game collision. The incident occurred in the seventh inning when Sosa, left fielder Brandon Marsh, and shortstop Trea Turner converged on a popup hit by Jazz Chisholm Jr. While Sosa successfully made the catch, Marsh’s elbow struck him in the back as they collided, causing him to fall and drop the ball. After the play, team trainers and manager Rob Thomson came out to check on him, and Sosa walked off slowly with Marsh assisting him.

Following the game, Sosa explained through a translator that he was diagnosed with a back contusion but avoided serious injury. He noted that the sun played a role in the confusion on the play, as both he and Turner lost sight of the ball before Marsh came in aggressively to make a play. Marsh admitted the sun had interfered with Turner’s vision and said he felt he needed to take charge. Initially, the umpires ruled the hit safe, but after video review, it was changed to an out since Sosa had caught the ball before the collision. Prior to leaving, Sosa hit a home run in the same inning, his fourth of the season, and is currently batting .270 with 25 RBIs in 56 games. Manager Thomson expressed optimism that Sosa may return to the lineup as soon as Sunday.
