Netflix is phasing out the ability to cast content from mobile devices to many smart TVs. A help page recently updated notes that “Netflix no longer supports casting shows from a mobile device to most TVs and TV-streaming devices. You’ll need to use the remote that came with your TV or TV-streaming device to navigate Netflix.”
Casting may still work on older Chromecast models and TVs with Google Cast, but only for users on an ad-free plan. Users with Google TV Streamer, Chromecast with Google TV, or TVs running Android TV may no longer be able to cast from the Netflix app. Reports from mid-November suggest Netflix has been quietly scaling back casting support, with some users noticing the option disappearing even while using the latest iOS app and an ad-free plan.
The change has frustrated users who rely on mobile casting to quickly find and play shows or resume playback, as using a TV remote can be slower and less precise. Netflix previously ended AirPlay support in 2019, citing “technical limitations,” and has not yet provided an explanation for the latest reduction in casting options.
