Emmy Award-winning journalist Tony Dokoupil has been named the new anchor of the “CBS Evening News,” beginning Monday, Jan. 5, 2026. The appointment marks a significant chapter for the long-running nightly newscast, which airs weekdays at 6:30 p.m. ET on CBS and streams on Paramount+.
In his first month, Dokoupil will embark on a nationwide tour, engaging with audiences across the country. His approach reflects over two decades of journalism covering stories worldwide and emphasizes reporting directly from where events unfold. CBS News leadership highlighted Dokoupil’s dedication to traditional journalistic values, his ability to ask tough questions, follow facts, and hold power accountable. CBS News president Tom Cibrowski praised Dokoupil as authentic, compassionate, and capable of connecting with viewers, whether interviewing world leaders or families affected by local events.
Dokoupil transitions from “CBS Mornings,” where he co-hosted alongside Gayle King and Nate Burleson since 2019. During his tenure, he reported on major global and domestic events, including the 2023 Israel terror attack and hostage release, the papal conclave in Rome, the Uvalde mass shooting, wildfires in Maui and California, the war in Ukraine, the 2024 Democratic and Republican National Conventions, and the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
Reflecting on his career, Dokoupil emphasized the importance of fair reporting and open discussion in a country as large and diverse as the United States. Executive producer Kim Harvey said Dokoupil’s talent for listening and understanding communities will guide the program’s nightly coverage, starting with the cross-country tour.
Since joining CBS News in 2016, Dokoupil has interviewed an array of prominent figures, including Vice President JD Vance, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Hillary Clinton, Bill Gates, Bill Belichick, Dolly Parton, Jennifer Lopez, Harry Styles, Greta Gerwig, and Janelle Monáe.
