The New York Police Department officer killed in Monday night’s skyscraper attack was a married immigrant and father of two young boys, with a third child on the way. Didarul Islam, 36, originally from Bangladesh, had served as an NYPD officer for over three years, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said during a news conference. At the time of the shooting, Islam was off duty, working a corporate security detail in the Bronx.
Commissioner Tisch honored Islam as a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice by putting himself in harm’s way. New York City Mayor Eric Adams described him as a man of faith who lived by his beliefs. The attack occurred around 6:30 p.m. at 345 Park Avenue, where 27-year-old Shane Tamura entered the building and opened fire. Tamura, who targeted the NFL headquarters within the building, killed four people before taking his own life on the 33rd floor. Investigators found a three-page suicide note in which Tamura claimed to suffer from CTE and requested his brain be studied. The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to assess the attack’s motives and circumstances.
Police Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of our department.
