BUFFALO, NEW YORK – Newly unsealed federal court documents reveal that Buffalo mass shooter Payton Gendron allegedly posted warnings about his attack on the group chat platform Discord shortly before carrying it out, prosecutors said. The filings are part of the government’s argument against the defense’s motion to suppress evidence.
According to the documents, Gendron reportedly shared his plans less than 30 minutes before the shooting began, sending a message to around 65 Discord users that read, “Happening THIS IS NOT A DRILL,” along with links to livestreams of the attack on Discord and Twitch, transcripts of his messages, and an invitation to join his server. Gendron is already serving a life sentence after pleading guilty to state charges for the May 14, 2022, attack that killed 10 Black individuals and injured three others. His federal trial is scheduled to begin next August.
