Dollar General is set to expand its presence in 2026, with a focus on rural areas across the U.S.

During its third-quarter 2025 earnings call, the discount retailer announced plans to open roughly 450 new stores in the United States, along with about 10 new locations in Mexico. The company also intends to relocate around 20 stores and complete approximately 4,250 store remodels.

CEO Todd Vasos highlighted the company’s long-term growth potential, noting that Dollar General has identified roughly 11,000 possible locations for future stores in the U.S. “While we don’t expect to capture every opportunity, we’re excited about our ability to significantly grow our footprint in the years to come,” he said.

Earlier this year, in March, Dollar General revealed plans to close 96 stores in the first quarter of fiscal 2025 following a “store portfolio optimization review.”

Most of the new stores, Vasos said, will be 8,500-square-foot formats located mainly in rural communities. He emphasized that the company is taking a measured approach to expansion, balancing new openings with store remodels rather than rushing growth. “Our competition today is really not opening a lot of stores, and for that, we don’t feel compelled to rush,” Vasos explained.
