LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – Investigators are questioning a family member following the deaths of director and actor Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, at their Los Angeles home. Authorities believe both suffered stab wounds, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton said no suspect has been identified and emphasized that investigators are speaking with every available family member to gather facts. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical aid call shortly after 3:30 p.m., finding a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman dead inside the residence. Reiner had turned 78 in March. Detectives from the Robbery Homicide Division are treating the case as an “apparent homicide.”
The couple lived in Brentwood, an upscale neighborhood known for celebrity residents. Reiner was a prolific figure in Hollywood, directing iconic films such as This Is Spinal Tap, A Few Good Men, When Harry Met Sally, and The Princess Bride. He first rose to fame as Meathead on Norman Lear’s All in the Family, earning two Emmy Awards for his role as a liberal foil to Archie Bunker.
The family of the late Norman Lear released a statement, saying Reiner and Michele spent their lives making meaningful contributions through art, activism, philanthropy, and love for family and friends. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the deaths a devastating loss for the city, highlighting Reiner’s influence on culture and his dedication to social and economic justice.
Rob Reiner, the son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, has been married to Michele Singer Reiner since 1989, and the couple has had three children together. He was previously married to actor-director Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981 and adopted her daughter, Tracy Reiner. Carl Reiner passed away in 2020, and Marshall died in 2018.
Brentwood is rarely the site of violent crime. The Reiners’ home is located about a mile from the site of the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.
