FIFA president Gianni Infantino is under scrutiny after a human rights nonprofit filed a complaint with the organization’s ethics investigators, citing his public support for President Trump and the awarding of a new peace prize to the U.S. leader. The complaint, submitted by London-based nonprofit FairSquare, alleges that Infantino’s actions represent repeated violations of FIFA’s Code of Ethics, which mandates political neutrality from football officials when engaging with governments.
Infantino had previously described Trump as “a close friend” and, during the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington, D.C., announced he was giving Trump the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize for his “unwavering commitment to advancing peace and unity.” FairSquare’s co-director, Nick McGeehan, called for FIFA’s Ethics Committee to launch an investigation into Infantino’s conduct. FIFA’s ethics rules state that those who fail to maintain political neutrality could face suspensions from the sport of up to two years, though it remains unclear whether the committee will pursue the complaint.
