Luigi Mangione will return to a New York courthouse on Monday for a pretrial hearing in his state case, where he faces accusations in the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. This marks his first court appearance since mid-September, when several terrorism charges were dismissed.

Last week, Mangione’s defense team filed a pretrial motion requesting that he be unshackled during the hearing, seeking at least one hand free to allow him to write. The defense is also challenging the inclusion of certain evidence, including statements Mangione made to law enforcement following his 2024 arrest at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, as well as a backpack recovered by police. Mangione remains in federal custody, and his next court appearance is scheduled for January 9 in his federal death penalty case. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
