Authorities have confirmed that Carrie Elizabeth Romney, the sister-in-law of former U.S. Senator Mitt Romney, died by suicide.

Carrie, 64, was found on October 10 after falling five stories from a parking structure near a shopping mall in Santa Clarita, California. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office determined her death resulted from blunt traumatic injuries sustained in the fall.

In a statement at the time of her death, the Romney family said, “Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives. We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

Carrie was married to George Scott Romney, Mitt Romney’s older brother and a corporate attorney. George, also known as Scott, was previously married to Ronna Romney and is the father of former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel.

Mitt Romney, who served as Massachusetts governor and was the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, represented Utah in the U.S. Senate from 2019 to January 2025. He is the son of the late George W. Romney, former Michigan governor and U.S. housing and urban development secretary.

Reports indicate that George filed for divorce from Carrie on June 10 after eight years of marriage. The filing cited May 25 as the couple’s separation date and listed “irreconcilable differences” as the reason. The couple did not have any children together.
