A woman was arrested Thursday afternoon for allegedly stabbing a tourist inside Macy’s flagship store in New York City.
The victim, who was visiting Manhattan from California, was changing her infant daughter’s diaper in a seventh-floor restroom at Macy’s Herald Square location when 43-year-old Kerri Aherne of Tewksbury, Massachusetts, reportedly attacked her, stabbing her multiple times in the back and arm. The child was unharmed, and the victim was transported to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
The attack occurred just before 3 p.m., and the victim’s husband reportedly intervened, disarming Aherne and holding her until police arrived. Both the victim and her husband are employed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Aherne has been charged with two counts of assault, attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and endangering the welfare of a child. She is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
A Macy’s spokesperson said the company is “deeply saddened about the incident” and emphasized that customer and employee safety remains a top priority, deferring further questions to authorities. Police said the attack appears unprovoked and remains under investigation.
