Nick Reiner had been disruptive at a holiday party Saturday attended by his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, just hours before the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles home. According to people familiar with the situation, Nick Reiner’s behavior made other guests uncomfortable during the gathering, which was hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien. Those familiar with the evening said his parents appeared upset and embarrassed by his actions and privately expressed concern about his well-being. Nick Reiner was arrested Sunday and later booked on suspicion of murder in connection with their deaths. Authorities have said he is being held without bail as the investigation continues. Representatives for O’Brien and comedian Bill Hader, who was also at the party, did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and it was not clear whether Nick Reiner had legal representation.
The deaths of Rob Reiner, a celebrated actor and filmmaker, and Michele Singer Reiner sent shockwaves through Hollywood, where the couple was widely respected and well-liked. At the same time, those close to the family said Nick Reiner’s struggles with addiction and mental health had been ongoing for years. Now 32, he had spoken publicly about entering rehab as a teenager and had lived on and off at his parents’ Brentwood home. In 2015, he collaborated with his father on the film “Being Charlie,” which drew from his experiences with addiction and recovery. Rob Reiner later described the project as a deeply personal process that helped both father and son better understand the toll addiction had taken on their family. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the circumstances surrounding the deaths as the case remains under investigation.
