Rep. Valerie Foushee (D-N.C.) is facing a rematch challenge from her 2022 primary opponent, Nida Allam, who announced her bid for the 2026 Democratic primary on Thursday. Allam, a Durham County commissioner, is positioning herself as a progressive alternative to Foushee, emphasizing the need for leaders who will take bold action on pressing issues.

Allam’s campaign has secured backing from progressive heavyweights, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Justice Democrats, the Sunrise Movement, and the Working Families Party. She said in a statement, “We need leaders in Washington who will actually fight to deliver the brighter future we deserve and desperately need. We cannot wait three more years pretending that a status quo that is failing us today will protect our communities tomorrow.” Foushee’s campaign has not yet responded to requests for comment.
