Ukraine and Russia continued overnight drone strikes into Wednesday, coinciding with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s preparations to submit an updated peace plan to U.S. officials.
Russia’s Defense Ministry reported shooting down at least 38 Ukrainian drones, including six over the Moscow region, four of which were described as heading toward the capital. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said emergency crews responded to multiple sites where debris from downed drones fell.
Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched 80 drones overnight, with 50 intercepted or suppressed, and reported drone impacts at 29 locations across seven regions.
The drone exchanges occurred as Zelenskyy finalized a revised peace proposal to send to U.S. negotiators on Wednesday. Key unresolved issues include the status of partially occupied eastern Ukrainian territories and security guarantees for Kyiv to prevent future Russian aggression.
Zelenskyy told Ukrainian media Tuesday evening that the submission had been delayed while Kyiv’s team worked with European national security advisers. He also argued that Russia’s continued attacks demonstrate Moscow’s lack of genuine commitment to peace.
Additionally, Zelenskyy proposed an “energy truce” to pause strikes on energy infrastructure from both sides, but the Kremlin rejected the offer, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stating that Russia seeks peace, not a ceasefire.
