MEXICO CITY, MEXICO – A small aircraft crashed in central Mexico on Monday while attempting an emergency landing, killing at least seven people. The crash occurred in San Mateo Atenco, an industrial municipality located about three miles from Toluca International Airport and roughly 31 miles west of Mexico City. The plane had departed from the coastal city of Acapulco and was carrying eight passengers along with two crew members. Authorities said that several hours after the crash, only seven bodies had been recovered, leaving uncertainty about the fate of the remaining occupants.
Officials said the aircraft appeared to be attempting to land in an open soccer field when it struck the metal roof of a nearby industrial building, triggering a large fire at the site. The resulting blaze spread quickly, prompting emergency crews to evacuate approximately 130 people from surrounding businesses and facilities as a precaution. Firefighters and rescue teams worked to contain the flames and secure the area while investigators began examining the cause of the crash, which remains under investigation.
