OMAHA, NEBRASKA – Three Omaha police officers were wounded, and a suspect was killed Wednesday during a shootout at a gas station following an earlier shooting in the city.
The suspect, a man in his 20s, had reportedly shot a 61-year-old man multiple times in the chest around noon at a grocery store, according to authorities. Police obtained the suspect’s vehicle license plate and tracked him to a nearby gas station.
Officers observed the suspect enter a restroom, and after additional officers arrived, they ordered him to come out. When he emerged firing, one officer was struck before the suspect retreated back inside. A bystander who had been in the restroom managed to exit safely. Officers again ordered the suspect out, leading to a second exchange of gunfire. During that confrontation, a second officer was shot, and a third was hit by shrapnel. Police returned fire, killing the suspect.
Police described the day as extremely dangerous and said all three officers sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. They were transported to a local hospital, and the officer injured by shrapnel has since been released.
The man who was shot at the grocery store remains in critical condition.
