The White House is set to announce new fuel economy standards on Wednesday, according to administration officials.

The Trump administration plans to propose rolling back the standards introduced by former President Joe Biden last year, which required passenger cars and light trucks to reach an average fuel efficiency of roughly 50 miles per gallon by 2031. President Donald Trump is scheduled to address the changes at 2:30 p.m. ET from the Oval Office, with executives from Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis expected to attend.

Biden’s fuel efficiency rules were designed in part to boost electric vehicle sales in the U.S., but Trump has moved to eliminate federal support for EVs since taking office. The American Petroleum Institute, representing the oil industry, has lobbied for repealing the previous standards, arguing that they push toward phasing out liquid-fuel vehicles.

The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, first established in 1975, have been gradually tightened over the decades to improve vehicle efficiency and reduce emissions.
