President Donald Trump said an executive order that would prevent states from setting their own rules on artificial intelligence is expected soon.

Trump posted on Truth Social that while the U.S. is leading in AI development, allowing 50 states to impose differing rules could “destroy AI in its infancy.” He indicated the order could be issued this week.

Trump has previously promoted AI through a February executive order aimed at boosting U.S. investment, deploying federal resources, building technological infrastructure, and increasing support for AI development.

Concerns over AI have grown, with experts warning about its rapid development and potential harms, including misinformation, psychological effects, misuse of copyrighted material, and the use of images of real people without consent. Election interference has also been highlighted, as AI-generated robocalls mimicking politicians’ voices were used in the 2024 election to discourage voter turnout.

In response, some states have enacted laws to protect personal information, restrict the use of individuals’ likenesses, ban election-related deep fakes, prohibit AI-generated deceptive material, and require disclosure when users interact with generative AI.
