The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported its busiest day ever on Sunday, screening more than 3.1 million travelers at airports across the United States as holiday travel peaked. This figure surpasses the previous single-day record of 3.09 million passengers set on June 22. The TSA said all of its top 10 busiest travel days have occurred since July 2024, with eight of them happening this year.
The record comes amid significant travel disruptions caused by weather, which resulted in over 1,000 flight cancellations and more than 13,000 delays nationwide on Sunday. As of early Monday afternoon, more than 300 flights had been canceled and over 3,300 delayed due to a winter storm moving from Kansas to Maine through Tuesday. Snowfall of two to four inches is expected across parts of the Midwest on Monday afternoon, with heavier accumulations of over half a foot forecast from northern Pennsylvania to central Maine as the storm moves into the Northeast. Drivers returning from holiday travel are advised to wait until after 8 p.m. to avoid heavy traffic.
