Uber and Avride have officially launched a commercial robotaxi service in Dallas, giving riders the chance to hail Avride-branded autonomous vehicles through the Uber app. The initial rollout features a human safety operator behind the wheel and is limited to a 9-square-mile area that includes downtown Dallas. Both companies say fully driverless operations and an expanded service area are planned for the future.
The all-electric Hyundai Ioniq 5 fleet is equipped with Avride’s self-driving technology and is part of Uber’s broader push into autonomous mobility. Riders using UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric may be matched with a robotaxi, though the match is not guaranteed. Fares remain the same as traditional rides, and users can choose to switch to a human-driven vehicle if they prefer. Uber will handle day-to-day fleet operations, including maintenance, charging, and rider support, while Avride oversees testing and technology integration. The companies plan to scale the Dallas fleet to hundreds of vehicles in the coming years, and Uber aims to have autonomous vehicles on its network in at least 10 cities worldwide by the end of 2026.
