Venmo confirmed early Thursday that a technical issue affecting its payment service had been resolved and that the platform was “back up and running” after users experienced several hours of disruptions sending and receiving money.

The company apologized for the inconvenience in a post on X, thanking users for their patience while the team addressed the problem.

Reports of outages began to surge around 6:30 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, according to Downdetector, a website that monitors online service disruptions. Users took to social media to report difficulties with the service, with some saying they were unable to pay for essentials like medication or meals.

Venmo had previously posted on Wednesday night that it was “working on a fix,” but did not provide details on the cause of the outage or the solution implemented.

Peer-to-peer payment apps like Venmo have grown significantly in popularity over the past decade, with Venmo reporting 92 million active users last year.
