Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin reported to training camp on Sunday after a four-day holdout, although he and the team have yet to finalize new contract terms. The 2024 second-team All-Pro was removed from the reserve/did not report list and placed on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list due to an ankle injury sustained last season, according to coach Dan Quinn.
Despite his uncertain status, McLaurin’s return energized fans, who greeted him with chants as he arrived behind the team facility following practice. He spent about 30 minutes signing autographs and taking photos before briefly addressing reporters. McLaurin acknowledged the difficulty of watching his teammates practice during the holdout and emphasized the business aspect of the situation, but focused mainly on the positive experience of rejoining his team and fans. “It feels good to be around my teammates and around my fans,” he said.
Coach Quinn expressed his excitement over McLaurin’s arrival, calling him “an awesome competitor” after speaking with him directly on Saturday. McLaurin missed the first four official days of camp, incurring a daily fine of $50,000. He is in the final year of a three-year, $68.2 million extension signed in 2022, but has been pushing for a new contract. Last season, he recorded career highs with 13 touchdown receptions and 1,096 yards on 82 catches.
While on the PUP list, McLaurin is barred from on-field activities but can attend meetings and is counted on the 90-player roster limit. He worked with the training staff inside the team facility on Sunday. He participated in parts of the offseason program but skipped on-field portions of organized team activities and mandatory minicamp.
Teammates have voiced their support. Quarterback Jayden Daniels praised McLaurin, emphasizing their strong connection and describing the situation as “just business in the NFL.” Washington also released cornerback Fentrell Cypress II to free up a roster spot.
