Spanish rider Garcia becomes oldest stage winner at women’s Tour de France at 41

Mavi Garcia became the oldest rider to win a stage at the women’s Tour de France on Sunday, securing victory in the second stage with a solo breakaway. The 41-year-old Spaniard glanced back twice before realizing she would hold off the chasing peloton, raising her arms in celebration as she crossed the finish line in Quimper.

Garcia launched her attack with about 11 kilometers remaining on the 110.4-kilometer hilly stage through Brittany. Despite the peloton closing in near the end, she maintained her effort to win by three seconds. Dutch rider Lorena Wiebes finished second, while Kim Le Court of Mauritius took third in a sprint to the line. Le Court’s performance earned her the race leader’s yellow jersey, narrowly overtaking cycling legend Marianne Vos, who won the opening stage and finished fifth on Sunday. Both riders share the same overall time, but Le Court leads thanks to her stronger combined finishes. The race continues Monday with a flat stage favoring sprinters, concluding with nine stages total, ending August 3.
