Authorities are conducting a search for three individuals who were aboard a private twin-engine plane that went down off the central California coast.
Emergency responders were alerted Saturday night after a lost radar signal triggered a response, and residents called 911 reporting the incident. Witnesses near Pacific Grove said they heard the sound of an aircraft engine revving, followed by a splash in the water.
The plane, identified as a Beech 95-B55 Baron, departed from San Carlos airport at 10:11 p.m. local time and was last tracked near Monterey at 10:37 p.m., according to flight data. Multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard and California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, joined the search. Observers on shore reported seeing debris from the crash wash up along the coastline. Officials estimate the plane went down approximately 200 to 300 yards offshore.
The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation into the crash.
