Lockheed Martin in Owego has been awarded $18.8 million for a defense contract from the U.S. Department of the Navy, Congressman Nick Langworthy announced on July 25. The funding will support the production of 25 Digital Magnetic Anomaly Detection (DMAD) hardware kits designed to detect underwater magnetic field changes, often caused by submarines. The contract also includes program management services related to the project, which is expected to be completed by January 2027.
Congressman Langworthy called the contract “a tremendous win” for the Owego facility and the Southern Tier region, emphasizing its importance for national defense as well as the local economy. Tish Rourke, Vice President of Sikorsky Maritime Systems, highlighted the advanced capability of the DMAD kits, noting that MH-60R helicopter operators can now significantly enhance their anti-submarine warfare with this removable device. The sensor integrates with mission computer software and works alongside other systems such as sonobuoys and long-range active dipping sonar, offering flexible and improved detection options for military aircraft.
