A small plane crashed early Monday morning in southwestern South Dakota, resulting in the death of one of the two occupants, while the other was flown to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The New Underwood Fire Department, serving a town of about 538 people roughly 150 miles southwest of Pierre, reported that the single-engine plane went down around 6 a.m. local time in the 22800 block of 159th Avenue.
Responders arrived on the scene, found both occupants, and performed emergency medical procedures before extracting them from the wreckage. One person was pronounced dead at the site, while the other was airlifted to Monument Hospital. The victims’ identities have not been released. The National Transportation Safety Board, which identified the aircraft as a Piper PA-22-150, is investigating the cause of the crash. This accident comes shortly after two other deadly plane crashes over the weekend—one in Idaho and another in the Pacific Ocean near California—each claiming three lives.
